A/N: And I am back with another short story. Miraculous, she does it three months in a row! I was inspired to use a family that some of you may notice is from a previous entry. It’s Quintin and his new family. This time with a little insight into the now preteen Stella’s life. Hope you enjoy.
Please don’t forget to read all the other entries and if mine seems like a favorite vote for it along with two others in the Novice category and a top three in the Veteran’s category. LisaBeeSims had outlined all of this on her blog and on the page in the Sims Forums. There is also a Facebook Page for those who want to like and follow. Make sure to bookmark these pages and check out ALL the amazing writers. Seriously this community is awesome and supportive. Or if you are a writer looking for an oppurtunity, check it out and enter!
Please enjoy my story as well and feel free to leave feedback. As always Happy Simming!
WORD COUNT: 500 (On the dot, with lots of edits….)
SCREENSHOTS: 3 (Since my main character is blind I went with the minimum screenshots to challenge myself….and totally not because I waited so long. lol I don’t think anyone is going to believe that really was my decision…I swear it was though….)
* * *
“And each passing year, his time under the stars gazing up grew even more limited…” The computer recited the words aloud the words Quintin’s fingers tapped out. He knew the placement of every key. As a blind writer he was well versed.
He was working in the solitude of the early afternoon as he always did. His wife Molly was out with some friends and the bus would drop off Stella soon.
Creak… He paused in his typing as the front door of their house opened and was followed by two thuds as Stella’s tennis shoes hit the floor. He doubted they had landed where they were supposed to be, which was strange for Stella. He heard her footsteps go to her room just on the other side of the wall, her backpack hit the floor and her bed sag.
“Stella?” lifting his head he turned his ear towards the door. But his stepdaughter didn’t reply. Frowning, Quintin stood and he mentally counted the steps to the office door. His cane was leaned against the desk but he hated using it. Molly and Stella were usually good about keeping things exactly where they were so he could navigate well without it.
Navigating his way out of the office and down the hall to Stella’s room next door he knocked. “Hey… something bothering you?” He pushed the door open lightly.
“…People” Stella’s voice was muffled and by the sound of it she must have been on the bed with the comforter over her face.
He stepped into the room and leaned back against the door frame. He had learned Stella wasn’t as careful here as elsewhere so he didn’t dare try to navigate to her bed without his cane. Ah, people. Quite the conundrum when you prefered the solitude of painting in your room. “Care to a whinge a bit?”
The comforter shuffled and Quintin imagined that Stella must have come out from under the covers to give him a strange look, judging by the silence that followed his statement. “…Whinge?”
Quintin smiled. Stella might only be in 5th grade but words had always intrigued her. “Whinge…. to complain persistently and in a peevish or irritating way.”
Another pause, Stella thinking his words over. He had lost his sight long before he had ever seen her face but he knew her silences well. “No. I don’t want to sound like my classmates. Everyone was mad at Mrs. Birds. She wanted everyone to write a paper.”
“A paper. What’s the subject?”
“The place we’d most like to travel. …No one wanted to write a paper over the long weekend. Bethany was whinging all over the classroom. She has plans to go to the lake with her family…” Quintin imagine she rolled her eyes then.
“…so where are you going to go in your paper?”
The bed creaked. “I haven’t decided. Where is your story taking place?”
And the mood had passed. Preteens. He only hoped it would always be this easy.

A/N: Also if you haven’t read it. Stella and Quintin are the stars of a previous entry called “No Take Backs” featured here on the blog. I really thought they were cute and wanted to continue a little. Especially since Stella is a longer child. Who wouldn’t want to whinge a little if you had to deal with people all day and you’d rather be alone.
Bonus points for anyone who recognizes where the first line actually comes from as well… 😉 Thanks again for reading. Especially the rambling.
